Garden B.A.S.S. Week 1 – Stack, Don’t Slump.

By Josie Wild

Summer is a great time to move more, get outside, and enjoy the simple things. Walking, gardening, being in the fresh air, it all helps your body and your mood.

This week’s B.A.S.S, we are focusing on one simple habit that makes outdoor movement feel easier and more supported: Stack, Don’t Slump.

Why DOES stacking matter?

Stacking is simply about how you line your body up when you stand, bend, reach, and lift.

When your heels, hips, and chest are gently stacked, your core switches on without you having to think about it.

Movement feels smoother, more supported, and easier to control, which makes everyday things like gardening, hanging out the washing, or pottering around feel much kinder on your body.

The benefits of stacking

Stacking doesn’t mean holding yourself stiff or frozen in place. Think of it as a quick reset before you move.

When your body is stacked, everything just works a little better.

Staying stacked helps to:

  • make breathing feel easier, so your core can support you naturally

  • reduce unnecessary load through your joints, letting muscles do the work they’re meant to do

  • improve balance and stability, especially on uneven ground like gardens and pathways

  • support more comfortable, confident movement, so aches and pains are less likely to creep in

It’s about moving well now so you can keep doing the things you enjoy.

What to do this week

Watch the video. Do the 2-minute B.A.S.S routine each day.

That’s it. Four fun exercises, around 30 seconds each. Easy to fit in and easy to stick with.

And throughout the day, when you notice yourself slumping, just think:
Stack, don’t Slump.
