Garden B.A.S.S. Week 2 – Better Bending

By Carolyn Kenny

Think about how many times you bend in a day.

In the garden, picking up washing, getting up and down. When bending is well organised, everyday tasks feel easier and more controlled.

This week, we’re focusing on bending with confidence.

WHAT DOES “BENDING WITH CONFIDENCE” ACTUALLY MEAN?

It means your legs and core share the load, instead of your back or knees doing all the work.
Breathing plays a big role here. A calm exhale helps your body organise before you move.
When this is paired with a clear hip fold, our bobbing duck, bending often feels smoother and more controlled.

Think: hips lead, breath supports.

When we slump into a bend, breathing becomes restricted and load is pushed into the back and knees. A more stacked, organised position helps your body spread effort evenly and move with better control.

Why bending well matters

When bending is well organised:

  • Your spine and knees experience less unnecessary strain

  • Your legs do more of the work they are designed for

  • Breathing feels easier and more coordinated

  • Movement becomes steadier and more efficient

What to do this week

In class, we’ll build this step by step—starting with our reboot, then progressing through bending, squats, split squats, and a few bunny hops, all while keeping breath control steady.

Watch the video. Practise the 2-minute B.A.S.S. each day.

And at home or in the garden, remember:
Bend like a bobbing duck.
