Garden B.A.S.S. Week 3 – Pelvic Floor & Lifting
By DIMITY THOMPSON
Lifting is part of everyday life. From gardening to housework, your body needs to manage load, pressure and movement together.
This week’s focus is on helping your pelvic floor work with you, not against you, during these moments. It’s not about bracing all day or avoiding effort. It’s about timing, confidence and letting go when the task is done. This is where we use ‘The Knack’,
What is ‘the knack’?
It’s a brief pelvic floor contraction timed just before and during an effort, followed by a full relaxation afterwards. When the timing is right, your body feels more supported and movements often feel easier.
WHY THIS HELPS?
Used well, this approach can help your body manage pressure during lifting
It supports confidence during everyday tasks
It encourages strength without unnecessary tension
It reinforces that lifting can be safe and helpful, not something to avoid
HOW TO USE THIS IN EVERYDAY LIFE?
Think ahead before you lift or push. Prepare gently, move with confidence, then fully relax once the effort is finished. Over time, this co-ordination can become more automatic.
What to do this week
Watch the video and do the 2-minute B.A.S.S routine each day
And at home or in the garden, remember:
