Introducing Doctor Kate
Our amazing Physio, Kate Roberts, has been working hard behind the scenes for the past three years on her PhD focused on Low Back Pain. As part of her research, Kate wrote six papers that describe a novel approach to managing low back pain, emphasizing the positive actions individuals can take when dealing with chronic pain.
We extend a huge congratulations to her on the recent submission of her thesis! With her findings, we aim to continue improving and remain at the forefront of research into the latest back pain treatments for our clients.
Now that Kate has completed her PhD we are very excited to announce her return to Physiocise classes and consultations starting in January. We know our clients will be just as happy to have her back.
Below is the abstract of Kate’s recently submitted thesis. If anyone is interested in reading any of the four research papers Kate has published over the past few years, please see the links below. She is also about to publish two more! What amazing work, Kate. We are so proud of you.
“Given the escalating global impact of low back pain (LBP), a recent initiative highlighted in The Lancet Series on LBP emphasized the urgent need for healthcare providers to actively support individuals with LBP in embracing healthy lifestyles and fostering resilience against pain. This thesis, therefore, endeavoured to create a model of resilience for LBP with a focus on the positive attributes that contribute to resilience. The research brings together the impact of healthy lifestyle behaviours (i.e., adequate physical activity, optimal sleep, non-smoking, non-problematic alcohol consumption and maintaining an appropriate weight), positive social interactions, and emotional well-being on the capacity to maintain high levels of function, the pursuit of meaningful goals, and engagement in valuable tasks such as work and recreation when faced with LBP. As resilience changes with time and circumstance, both longitudinal and qualitative studies were used to complete the body of work, which culminated in the development of a sleep retraining program designed specifically for people with LBP.”

PHYSIOCISE TRAVELS
We had so many fabulous photos from last term’s travel feature that we thought we would make it a regular feature here each term! So if you have any travel plans, remember to send us a photo of you during your trip! #physiocisetravels
Here are some fabulous photos from the last few months.
Click on the images to view them in full size. 👇🏼
First up, Maria King, our Physio, on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne for the AFL grand final (they were happier on the way there than on the way home!). Roadside stop to do some lunges!
Chris Daly (Advanced Floppy class) – needing a standing Psoas Stretch at St Ninian’s Isle on Shetland Island.
“The Standing Stones of Stenness on Orkney are 5,000 years old, older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. The attached photo shows I am slightly more flexible than the standing stone, but probably not much more. Amazing history here.”
Margie Davies (long term client) – Table Stretch in Skazka Canyon, Kyrgyzstan
Jennie Lakos (strong knees class) - ‘Hiking in Scotland which I couldn’t do without Physiocise’. What spectacular views.
Melissa Partington (our Managing Director and Physio) – Bulgarian lunges in Greece, lying buttock stretch in Cinque Terre, Italy and Table Stretch in Italy.
Michele Miller (Advanced floppy class), on recent trip to Japan.
“Walking in Japan involves steps, steps and more steps, especially in the mountains. My Japanese friend couldn’t believe I wasn’t aching after walking up and downhill for 15 km on Mt Takao in Tokyo. Thank you Physiocise!”
Sue Mavin (our Physio) doing her balance exercises on a beautiful beach in Sir Lanka.
What a stunning pic!
