TAKE THE LOAD OFF YOUR NECK

Do you get a pain in the neck every now and then? It’s common. In fact up to 70% of people will experience neck pain at some point in their life. If you work at a computer or in an office where you sit a lot you are even more likely to experience it.

Even if you don’t spend time at a desk, it's your total screen time that gets you.  Time spent looking at ALL your screens - your phone, iPad, computer, TV all adds up.

And does posture matter? Well, a 2019 systematic review by Mahmoud et al showed that adults who had neck pain also had increased forward head posture when compared to adults with no neck pain.  Which basically means that their posture was not as good as people without neck pain.

It also seems that there is moderate to strong evidence (Pain medicine 2020) that chronic headache sufferers also seem to have greater forward head posture than those who don’t get headaches.

So what’s the best way to relieve neck pain?

The good news is there is LOTS you can do. We have developed a simple concept we call The STOOL OF STABILITY. Your stool has 3 legs. One wobbly leg and you might be OK. More than that and you might tip over. The trick is to balance your stool as best you can.

LEG 1: Alignment/Posture
If you are constantly slumping, that forward head posture loads your neck joints and ligaments.

Solution - Realign your neck by shining your light, lightly holding your imaginary peach under your chin and rolling your shoulders frequently. Try and lift any screen up to eye level to decrease the angle of your neck.

LEG 2: Time
A little slumping every now and then is fine, but if you are doing it for hours on end, you will probably get pain.

Solution - Move often and try and limit your screen time.

LEG 3: Load
If Load is the thing that tips you over it could be physical, like doing a stack of gardening or lifting grandchildren. But it could also be mental load and stress which is the thing that makes you wobble.

Solution - If you are doing lots of physical work and you get sore after it, you may need to do more specific strengthening to get you balanced and ready for the activity. If you think it is the mental load that is tipping you over, try some mindfulness meditation and use your breathing to calm your neck.
