THE BRIGHTER SIDE OF MENOPAUSE

We hosted two fantastic evenings of insight into the Brightside of Menopause last month. Both events were booked out within a few days, which shows just how impactful the menopause stage of life is for the women in our life.

Dr Louise Tulloh provided the most current treatment options on offer, explaining the many hormone supplements and their various forms. There are also online medical consultations available through her platform VIV HEALTH. Our women's health expert Dimity discussed useful strategies to take charge of your bossy bladder! And the super stylish Carol Sae-Yung gave some excellent tips to feel confident in your body, and your closet, regardless of your age or shape.

Given the huge interest in this area, we will run further events soon. And in the meantime, we are looking to produce a podcast or video with all this amazing content. That way we can ensure many more women can be educated and informed about their bodies through this time of change.

BALANCE, BONES AND FALL PREVENTION

Physiocise Founder, Anna-Louise Bouvier has been spreading the word on the power of prevention!

Last month she was at the Mosman Community Centre, speaking about balance, bones and fall prevention. This is such an important area, with falls being the leading cause of mortality in adults over the age of 65.

The great news is there is so much you can do.

She presented the Physiocise model we call the Strong Bones ‘Three Legged-Stool’:

  1. Specific exercise

  2. Calcium-rich diet

  3. Vitamin D

We need each one to support the others in order to give us the strong bones we need as we age.

Weakness in any one leg can tip the stool over.

And it’s not just any exercise. You need specific exercises combining three forms of challenge.

  • Impact

  • Strength

  • Balance

The dosage and type of exercise are so critical to building bone density and preventing falls. Speak to your local physio to give you expert information, or contact the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Or you can find out more about Physiocise Bones and Balance programs here.

Many thanks to Mosman community centre for their enthusiastic support, and to the many people who attended on such a cold and blustery day!

Physiocise Strong Bones and Slip Saver programs target osteoporosis, osteopenia, bone density and balance.

As well as giving you the all-important right “dose” of exercise, we give you simple bite-sized snacks of the latest research into sun, diet, vitamin D and calcium intake, so you will have all the essentials you need to build stronger bones.

We will also assess your posture, movement, balance and core, so we can look after those dodgy necks, backs, knees and pelvic floors that can sometimes get in the way of you building strength.

If you would like to discuss about our Bones and Balance program with your physio

WELCOME TO OUR TEAM

You may have already come across them, and if not, you soon will!

We are excited to welcome three new physios to our team. Sam Peacock, Amy Kennedy & Sue Mavin all come with a wealth of physio knowledge and experience.

You may recognise Sam and Sue as they have been regular Physiocise clients as well as working for many years in everything from hands-on private practice, hospital care at the San, rehab and aged care. Both just love teaching classes!

Willoughby locals will know Amy as she has been working at the well-respected Physio Evolution in Edinburgh Rd for 12 years, and comes to us as that practice closes it’s doors in June.

We are so lucky to have them join our team, and they will be a valuable addition to our already impressive Physiocise Brains Trust.

Give them a warm welcome when you come across them. Online booking via our website with Sam, Amy and Sue is coming soon.

ACL RESEARCH UPDATE

L to R: Physiocise Managing Director, Melissa Partington, Dr Tom Cross and Physiocise Founder, Anna-Louise Bouvier.

We were excited to host Dr Tom Cross in March. He has been working tirelessly over the past nine years on researching the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in the knee.

For many decades the teaching and belief was that an injured ACL does not heal. Recent publications have challenged this long-held medical belief - discussing numerous examples of spontaneous healing of the acutely ruptured ACL.

Over the past nine years, Dr Cross has had close to 300 patients who, for various reasons, were interested in trying an alternative option to surgery. These patients have gone through the Cross Bracing Protocol. Combining Dr Cross’ deep understanding of anatomy and the mechanism of injury, he has devised a research-based diagnosis and brace protocol.

This protocol includes guidelines around the initial scanning technique, diagnosis and grading of the location within the ACL that is injured. This grading of the injury helps to offer the best treatment option for the patient – referral for surgery or, in some injury cases if appropriate, the Cross Bracing Protocol – with the sole aim to get the best outcome for the patient, and return to their life or sport as soon as possible. Dr Cross has had some excellent success and returns to sport in athletes undergoing this bracing protocol.

The “ACL-heal research project” was founded by Dr Mervyn Cross and Dr Tom Cross. From 2014 to the present day, 300 patients have navigated or are still navigating this novel bracing protocol that has been devised to treat non-surgically acute ACL injuries. It is in the process of becoming a research paper to be published.
